How IBM Is Betting on AI — And What It Means for IBM i Shops

AI is no longer a side project at IBM — it's the center of the company's strategy. Between the watsonx platform, Granite foundation models, and now AI-optimized hardware built directly into the Power Systems line, IBM has made it clear that enterprise AI isn't something bolted on top of existing systems. It's something built into them.

For anyone outside the IBM i world, that might sound like a cloud-and-data-science story that has nothing to do with a green-screen ERP system running payroll and inventory. But for IBM i shops, it's the opposite: this is one of the more consequential platform shifts in years, and it's happening on the system you already run.

AI Is Now Built Into the Hardware, Not Just the Software

The clearest signal of where IBM is headed is the recently announced S1112 — a Power Systems platform designed from the ground up with AI workloads in mind. That's a meaningful departure from the usual pattern of "run your AI workload somewhere else, then bring the results back to your core system." IBM is explicitly building processing power for AI directly into the same box that already runs your business applications.

That matters because it removes the biggest practical objection IBM i shops have had to AI: the idea that you'd need to extract your data, move it to a separate AI platform, process it, and pipe results back in. When the processing power lives on the same platform as your data, that entire extraction step disappears.

Data Gravity Is IBM i's Biggest AI Advantage

IBM i shops have spent decades accumulating something most organizations don't have: deeply structured, historically consistent business data sitting in DB2, connected to real transactional systems, with integrity rules most companies would take years to rebuild elsewhere. That's an enormous advantage for AI — models are only as good as the data behind them, and IBM i data is often cleaner and more complete than what companies have anywhere else in their stack.

The catch has always been access. Getting AI tools close enough to that data to actually use it, without disrupting the applications that depend on it, has been the hard part. IBM's current direction — AI-capable hardware paired with the same platform running your ERP — is a direct answer to that problem.

What "AI on IBM i" Actually Looks Like Today

This isn't hypothetical.
